Whether you’re a child, young adult, middle-aged, or a mature individual, it is time to discover the importance of living life with purpose. Therefore, discovering your purpose in life is essential. Some people fail and take entire lifetimes trying to figure out what they’re here for. Others succeed, and then others are aware of their goal but distracted from it. 

Did you know that those who know their life’s purpose and the importance of living life with purpose tend to live more meaningful lives than those who don’t?

This is because you know who you are, where you came from, and where you’re going. Those who live a life with purpose tend to live each day with joy and appreciation to the fullest. After all, honoring your life’s calling is the greatest gift you can give yourself. 

What is the science behind purpose?

People who have a strong sense of purpose live longer, have healthier hearts and are psychologically resilient. In addition to the effects on mood and motivation, discovering your purpose in life gives you drive.

According to research by Dr. Patricia Boyle from Rush University, a strong sense of purpose was linked to a 72 percent lower risk of stroke and a 44 percent lower rate of cardiovascular disease.

That said, a strong feeling of an other-centered purpose is a critical mechanism for developing biological grit and resilience. Having a sense of purpose in life is a tremendous tool for improving our patients’ quality of life and reducing the burden of various chronic medical diseases.

How hard is it to find your purpose?

The purpose may be straightforward and uncomplicated, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to find. One of the biggest obstacles is the gap between “what we want” and “how we behave.” We yearn for a meaningful life, yet we spend our days thinking and acting in ways that don’t help us achieve them. 

Part of the reason for this chasm is that we think of purpose as something we stumble upon. We don’t take the initiative to step out of our comfort zones to find that purpose. The thing is, the goal is not something that occurs to us. 

It’s something we can work on consciously. 

The challenge for us is to discover a way to educate ourselves and the people around us. We need to educate ourselves on how to tailor a way of life that includes finding purpose in everyday activities, being patient, making objectives, and enjoying life by appreciating the tiny triumphs along the way.

What happens when you find your purpose in life?

While living with a sense of purpose may not guarantee a perfect life, it does foster a desire to be a part of something bigger than oneself. Meaning you want to be a part of movements that make a positive difference in the world and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. 

It doesn’t matter if you call it faith, awareness, or whatever you choose to call it. This sense of anchor allows you to navigate through life. Simply because you can imagine your existence on this planet has a specific reason. Here are some of the things you’ll discover once you’ve found your purpose:

1. Despite the uncertainty, you gain clarity about the future

Uncertainty will always be present in life. However, it is at these moments that we either discover our potential or let opportunities pass us by. A life lived with purpose recognizes uncertainty as a means to accomplish something bigger and brighter. This encourages you to approach life with genuine amazement and curiosity rather than anxiety and pessimism.

2. You’ll notice positive habits

When you live a happier life, you’re better able to cope with stress using healthy coping mechanisms. People with a higher sense of meaning may be more willing to look after themselves because they believe their lives are more important.

Once you find your meaning and mission in life, you’ll want to preserve it longer. Naturally, you’ll develop positive habits. This entails more great exercise, meditation, mindfulness, and a reduction in drinking, smoking, and other harmful behaviors that jeopardize your health and safety. 

3. By empowering others, you assist them in achieving their goals

Having a mission allows you to identify your strengths and make you more willing to serve your community. Also, you will contribute, but you will also inspire others and possibly, influence them to find their purpose.

It is essential to know that it is nearly impossible to empower others if you lack self-awareness. Even if you have the talents to help others, living an unplanned life can sometimes cast a cloud of gloom over you. And this will obstruct your ability to help others progress. 

4. You’ll feel better physically and mentally 

Yes, your mental well-being is just as vital as your physical well-being. If you don’t know what you want or who you are, you won’t contribute any good to your brain and overall well-being.

Lastly, you’ll live a lifestyle that you don’t want, which might lead to serious mental health problems. Leading an unwanted life will lead to excessive worry, impatience, and depression. 

Once you find your purpose, the path is much clearer to you. You’ll feel better physically and mentally. And despite the roadblocks, you’ve already trained yourself to be resilient.

5. You’ll always practice gratitude in your life

Surprisingly, living a meaningful life encourages you to be grateful. When thankfulness takes precedence over your wants and desires, you’re more likely to live entirely in the now. You’ll be manifesting the good, savoring, and appreciating everything you have. 

When you live a purposeful life, you see the difference between needs and wants, and you make a daily effort to focus on what you have rather than what you don’t. Or, if you want something, it won’t be hard for you to manifest. When you live with a goal in mind, your work will naturally gravitate toward solving these issues.

Lastly, living with a feeling of purpose can help you overcome low self-esteem. When you shift your perspective on how adversity affects you, your confidence grows, and you feel capable of dealing with setbacks.

When you’re out of sync, you miss out. You must be clear on how you want to live your life and what you want it to look like. You’ll know you have a purpose when you’re excited to wake up every day.
